If this is your first night at Southwest Wyoming’s Home of Horsepower, Sweetwater Speedway, welcome. This guide to dirt track racing for fans is built for first-timers, families, and anyone curious about short-track racing. You’ll learn where to sit, what to bring, how to stay safe, what the flags mean, and how to cheer like a regular—without blocking anyone’s view or breaking any rules.
KEY THINGS EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW
Know your classes: We have IMCA Modifieds, Sport Mods, Sport Compacts and Hobby Stocks each event. There will also be ASCS Sprint Cars and Late Models along with the kids go-kart class.
Stand at the right times: National Anthem, Driver’s Prayer, driver intros, or when the whole crowd rises for a big restart. Sit during green-flag laps so folks behind can see.
Programs matter: each night drivers will have multiple times that they are on the track.
Each driver will have a Heat Race and Main Event.
Heats set the lineup, if there are more than 24 cars total in a class there will be a B-main to transfer the last qualifiers, and the feature crowns the winner. Main events will be after the intermission.
Don’t leave before you get to see all the action.
Download MyRacePass in the Google Play Store or in the Apple Store.
You can create an account for free and then look for Sweetwater Speedway for all the event details, line-ups, driver times and finishes.
You can also sign up for MRP Fantasy and pick drivers to win.
Watch the flags: Green = go, Yellow = caution, Red = stop, Black = a driver is sent off, Blue with Yellow Line = Hold your line faster cars are coming, White = last lap, Checkered = race over.
It’s loud: Bring earplugs for adults and earmuffs for kids. They are also available for purchase in the BEER SHED.
Dirt flies: You might want to wear safety glasses or clear goggles.
Clothing: It can get cold and you will want layers - or you can purchase track merchadise or a blanket in the BEER SHED.
They also have sunscreen and bug spray for your protection.
Mind the fence: It’s for safety. Don’t lean, climb, or press kids against it during green-flag action.
Keep aisles and stairs clear: Step out and move only during yellows or breaks to avoid blocking views.
Be patient with track prep: Watering and packing the surface during intermission makes the racing better and safer.
PITS AND DRIVER ACCESS
Pit passes: The pits are for “hot” race operations—assume moving vehicles at all times. Follow all signs and officials. Additional waivers must be signed.
Kids are allowed but they must stay by an adult at all times. Never step into a lane with moving cars.
The Pit Area will open to the general public at the end of the night after all the races are completed.
This is a great time to go see your favorite driver, g
et autographs and make new friends.
WHEN LEAVING
Do a quick clean-up: Pack out your trash if bins are full. Tracks appreciate it.
Exit carefully: Lots of families and strollers in the walkways. Expect dust in the lot—go slow.
Head to the Pit Area to meet your favorite driver.
FAQs
Q: What should I wear to a dirt track? A: Closed-toe shoes, comfy clothes you don’t mind getting dusty, a hat, and a light jacket. Bring earplugs and safety glasses for everyone.
Q: Are earplugs enough for kids? A: Use earmuff-style protection for kids. Foam plugs can work loose; muffs seal better and are more comfortable.
Q: Can I bring my own food and drinks? A: No. We have great food vendors here to serve you.
Q: Do I need an ID to purchase Beer if I am over 21?
A: EVERYONE, regardless of how old you look, must show an ID to purchase beer. Please help us keep our beer permit and insurance by following the rules.
