High-Octane Action Lights Up Sweetwater Speedway for Thrilling Two-Night Racing Showcase
ROCK SPRINGS, WY — Engines roared and dirt flew at Sweetwater Speedway this past weekend as a massive field of drivers across multiple divisions delivered two unforgettable nights of high-stakes, edge-of-your-seat racing action. Fans packing the grandstands in Rock Springs were treated to dominant performances, hard-fought battles, and incredible displays of grassroots motorsports excellence.
From the roar of the IMCA Modifieds to the fast-paced competitive fire of the Go Karts, the weekend delivered non-stop drama. Here is how the action unfolded across the divisions:
IMCA Modifieds: The Yeager Show Domination
The Yeager name reigned supreme in the powerhouse IMCA Modified division.
• Friday Night: Bryson Yeager (33Y) drove an incredible race from the 8th starting position to claim the checkered flag in Friday's 20-lap feature. Michael Hale finished second after leading all but the last lap, closely followed by Braxton Yeager in third.
• Saturday Night: Bryson Yeager proved his Friday performance was no fluke, repeating his trip to victory lane on Saturday night from the 10th starting spot. Terrell Payne claimed the runner-up spot, with Joe Miller rounding out the podium.
IMCA Sport Mods: Vasquez and Pitt Split Feature Glory
With 21 entries packing the pits each night, the Sport Mod division brought unmatched intensity. There was three and four wide racing throughout the filed all night.
• Friday Night: Jacob Vasquez (23J) capitalized on his pole position to capture a brilliant Friday night victory, holding off a charging Slade Pitt and Cole Marlatt.
• Saturday Night: JD Renfro in the 33JR out of Cheyenne started 10th and led a majority of the laps in the event. On lap 17 Slade Pitt (35) exacted his revenge after falling just short the night before, Pitt stormed from 9th on the grid to secure Saturday’s 20-lap feature victory over Scott Verner, Josh Pate, JD Renfro and Shawn Parish.
IMCA Sport Compacts: Ethan Poll Completes the Weekend Sweep
The Sport Compacts brought the largest car counts of the weekend, with 30 entries on Friday and 28 on Saturday. Despite the massive field, one driver stood tall above the rest.
• Ethan Poll (59) put on a passing clinic both nights, remarkably driving from the 10th starting position on both Friday and Saturday to complete a stunning weekend sweep of the A-Features. Travis Bott and Kaleb Clark secured the runner-up spots on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
IMCA Hobby Stocks: Vasquez and Johnson Trade Trophies
• Friday Night: Race Vasquez (33R) outmaneuvered the field from 5th grid position to grab Friday's 20-lap main event win ahead of Jeramy Johnson.
• Saturday Night: Jeramy Johnson (76) flipped the script, storming to the front to claim Saturday’s feature win, forcing Race Vasquez to settle for second in a spectacular weekend duel.
ASCS Sprint Cars: Kelly Miller Wins Friday
• Friday Night: The warriors of the ASCS Sprint Cars brought the speed on Friday, where Kelly Miller (2JR) of Alberta Canada navigated from 5th to capture a thrilling 20-lap feature win over Caleb Saiz and Adam Trimble.
• Saturday Night: Saturday however, there was a different story. Due to the constant winds with gusts over 50mhp winds, the drivers, along with track officials, made the difficult decision not to run the second heat or their main event. Because of their lightweight build and massive aerodynamic wings (which generate heavy downforce), gusts of this magnitude can severely destabilize the cars at high speeds, leading to dangerous flips and multi-car crashes. The drivers instead visited with the fans and showed them their cars up close.
Next-Generation Stars Excel in Go Kart Action
Sweetwater Speedway’s youngest competitors proved the future of racing is bright, showing immense skill and competitive drive all weekend long.
• Beginner Class: Chayse Haslam (07) took Friday night's feature win after an intense battle with Beau Delp. On Saturday, Beau Delp (2B) struck back, taking the feature win with Haslam finishing right on his bumper in second.
• Intermediate Class: Ethan Crawford (14) dominated Friday's action, while Karson Peterson (24K) put on a masterclass on Saturday to take the intermediate feature victory.
• Advanced Class: Keegan Bertagnolli (7) drove to victory lane in Friday's feature event. On Saturday night, McCoy Puckett (9) surged forward from 3rd to capture the 20-lap feature win.
The Ken Hansen Memorial Wild West Modified Tour will be the next event at the speedway on July 3rd and 4th. Ken’s fingerprints are all over Western dirt-track racing. He created opportunities for drivers from across the region when he stitched together the Wild West Modified Touring series when nobody else believed one could succeed. So it will be great to put on a large IMCA Modified Tour in his honor. The track will also be racing IMCA Sport Mods, Hobbies, Compact and Stock Cars will be added to the list for the weekend.
