May Mayhem Thrills Fans as Sweetwater Speedway Unleashes High-Octane 2026 Opening Weekend

ROCK SPRINGS, WY — The highly anticipated 2026 dirt track racing season officially roared to life at Sweetwater Speedway over Memorial Day weekend with the action-packed "May Mayhem" double-header. Proudly presented by primary sponsor Pitt Stop Motorsports, the two-night racing extravaganza drew a packed field of eager competitors and enthusiastic fans to the 3/8-mile oval at the Sweetwater Events Complex.
Drivers from across the region battled it out on a fast, demanding track, delivering edge-of-your-seat action across six distinct racing classes each night.
Night 1: Friday, May 22 Winners
Opening night set a high bar for the rest of the season, showcasing stellar lane-to-lane racing and an impressive roster of feature winners:
• IMCA Sport Mods: Opening weekend was a special event with additional pay for drivers in the Sport Mod Class. Payce Herrera 711 made a last lap, last corner pass on Josh Pate 33J who dominated a packed 27-car field to cross the checkered flag first in the night's 25-lap main event. Lapped traffic helped out Herrera who battled his way up from an eighth place starting position.
• IMCA Modifieds: Braxton Yeager 33BY captured a thrilling season-opening feature win over Casey Delp 2W and Justen Yeager 33.
• IMCA Hobby Stocks: Race Vasquez 33R fought off fierce competition to lock down the first feature victory of the season. Hobby Stocks will be at the track all season and this is their first year to contend for the coveted Championship.
• IMCA Sport Compacts: Cody Poll 18CJ bested an incredible 34-entry field to secure his place in victory lane.
• Go Kart - Advanced: Cooper Wright 83C took top honors in the advanced youth class.
• Go Kart - Intermediate: Karsyn Gann 35G drove a flawless 12 laps to secure the win.
• Go Kart - Beginner: Chayse Haslam 07 outlasted the 11-kart field to jumpstart the weekend with a victory.
Night 2: Saturday, May 23 Winners
Drivers returned to the dirt on Saturday night with adjustments made and scores to settle, producing fresh faces in victory lane and an incredible repeat performance in the Sport Compact and Sport Mod division:
• IMCA Modifieds: Michael Hale 01H had a dominating performance, but lap traffic and a better view gave Kade Dimick 49K the ability to rocket past Hale on a last lap pass to claim Saturday's hard-fought 20-lap feature win.
• IMCA Sport Mods: Payce Herrera 711 proved his Friday night performance was no fluke, completing the perfect weekend sweep by taking the checkers again on Saturday.
• IMCA Hobby Stocks: Jeramy Johnson 76 capitalized on a front-row start to turn the tables on Friday's winner, Race Vasquez, capturing the night's main event.
• IMCA Sport Compacts: Cody Poll 18CJ went back-to-back battling from an eighth place starting position, defying the odds against 32 competitive entries to complete a flawless weekend double.
• Go Kart - Advanced: Keegan Bertagnolli 7 edged out the competition to grab the Saturday feature win.
• Go Kart - Intermediate: Graham Hammond 11 found the speed to slide into the number one spot for a trip to the winner's circle. This is his first win at the track since starting in 2025.
• Go Kart - Beginner: Beau Delp 2B bounced back from a tough Friday night to claim the ultimate redemption victory in the beginner feature. This is his first win at the track since he started racing in 2024. The Beginner B-Main was won by Knox Doherty 33K.
Looking Ahead
Sweetwater Speedway extends its deepest gratitude to Pitt Stop Motorsports, the track officials, the race teams, and the incredible fans who turned out to kick off the summer in style. The chase for the 2026 track championships is officially underway!
The next high-octane event on the schedule brings the heavy hitters of sprint car racing to town. Don't miss the ASCS Sprint Car Summer Sizzler arriving this June 19 – 20, 2026. The 50/50 volunteer groups will be the Rock Academy on Friday and the Friends of Amanada Delp helping to raise funds to support her fight against cancer. The food trucks coming out will be Street Meats, The Food Dude, Ye Old Kettle Corn, the Snak Shak and Awe Sha Sno Balls.
